How to Keep Your Pool Energy-Efficient All Season Long

Running a pool doesn’t have to mean watching your electricity bill climb all summer. A few smart adjustments to how you operate and maintain your equipment can make a real difference — without sacrificing water quality or comfort.

Run Your Pump at the Right Times

Your pool pump is the biggest energy consumer in your setup. Many pool owners run their pump far longer than necessary. Most residential pools only need 8 to 12 hours of circulation per day, depending on size and bather load. Running your pump during off-peak electricity hours, typically overnight, can also lower costs if your utility charges time-of-use rates.

If you’re still using a single-speed pump, this is where the biggest savings hide. Variable-speed pumps can run at lower speeds for longer periods, using a fraction of the energy while still keeping your water properly circulated. The difference in annual electricity costs can be substantial.

Keep Your Filter Clean

A dirty or clogged filter forces your pump to work harder, which means more energy consumed for less circulation. Check your filter pressure gauge regularly. When it reads 8 to 10 PSI above its baseline, it’s time for a backwash or cartridge cleaning. A well-maintained filter keeps your entire system running efficiently.

Use a Pool Cover

A simple solar cover can reduce heat loss by up to 70 percent. Heat escapes primarily through evaporation, and a cover dramatically slows that process. If you’re heating your pool, covering it overnight or when it’s not in use means your heater runs less, saving both energy and money. Covers also reduce water evaporation, which means fewer chemical top-ups and less strain on your auto-fill system.

Optimize Your Heater

If you use a pool heater, lowering the temperature by even one or two degrees can noticeably reduce energy consumption. Heat your pool to a comfortable temperature rather than a warm one. Most swimmers are perfectly happy at 27°C to 28°C! Also make sure your heater is properly maintained: a dirty burner, corroded heat exchanger, or faulty thermostat can all cause your unit to work overtime.

Upgrade to LED Pool Lighting

If your pool still has incandescent or halogen lights, switching to LED can cut lighting energy use by up to 80 percent. LED pool lights also last significantly longer, meaning fewer replacements and less maintenance over the years.

If your equipment is outdated or underperforming, our team can help you find energy-efficient upgrades that fit your pool and your budget. From variable-speed pumps and modern heaters to covers and LED lighting, we’ll have everything you need to cut costs without cutting corners.
