How Often Should You Really Clean Your Pool in the Summer?

À quelle fréquence faut-il vraiment nettoyer sa piscine en été ?

Summer is prime pool season. The weather’s hot, the kids are off school, and the pool becomes the heart of the backyard. But with more swimmers, more sunscreen, and more heat, your pool’s needs increase too.

But how often should you really clean your pool during the summer months? The short answer? More often than you think. The long answer? Let’s break it down.

1. Daily Skimming and Basket Emptying

Skimming the surface of your pool and emptying the skimmer baskets every day may sound like overkill, but trust us—it’s worth it. Leaves, bugs, dirt, pollen, and debris pile up fast in hot weather. Left untouched, they sink to the bottom or clog up your filtration system. A few minutes a day can save hours of work later.

2. Brushing and Vacuuming – 1 to 2 Times a Week

Algae, dirt, and oils can cling to pool walls and floors even when the water looks clear. Brushing the surfaces and vacuuming helps prevent algae growth and slippery buildup. You should aim for at least once a week—but if your pool sees heavy use, bump it to twice.

Pay special attention to steps, ladders, and corners—algae love those spots.

3. Test Water Chemistry – 2 to 3 Times a Week

With every splash, sunscreen application, or afternoon rain, your pool’s chemical balance is affected. During summer, you should be testing your pool water at least two to three times per week for pH, chlorine, and alkalinity levels.

If your water feels irritating to skin or eyes, or starts looking a little cloudy, test immediately. Catching imbalances early prevents bigger problems later.

4. Shock Your Pool – Every 1 to 2 Weeks

Shocking (super-chlorinating) your pool helps kill off contaminants and chloramines—byproducts of chlorine that cause strong smells and irritation. Depending on how often your pool is used, plan to shock it every 1 to 2 weeks.

After a party, heavy rain, or periods of high heat, shocking is especially important.

5. Filter Maintenance – Weekly to Monthly

Your filter works hard all summer long. Sand, cartridge, or DE—whatever your filter type, you’ll want to backwash or clean it weekly, and do a deeper inspection monthly. A dirty or clogged filter affects water clarity and circulation.

6. Professional Tune-Up – Once Mid-Summer

Even with consistent upkeep, having a pro inspect your system mid-season can catch things you might miss. Our pool professionals can check your pump, test your equipment, and balance your chemicals properly—especially after heatwaves or extended use.

Summer is when your pool shines—but only if it’s cared for. Daily and weekly cleaning, water testing, and regular maintenance are key to keeping your pool crystal clear and safe. If you’re short on time (or energy), hiring a pool cleaning service can be the best way to protect your investment—and your sanity.

Don’t let grime, algae, or cloudy water ruin your summer fun. A clean pool guarantees a happy family.
