Those of you who enjoy marathon-length laps in the swimming pool would surely enjoy taking a dip in Algarrobo’s Pool. Situated in the the Valparaiso region in Chile, it was named the World’s Biggest Pool by the Guinness Book of Records.
It covers 20 acres, is 3.5 meters deep at its maximum, and contains 250 million liters of seawater from the Pacific Ocean, that is filtered and treated in permanent circulation.
Although it is filled with seawater, the temperature of the pool reaches a shocking 26°C, making it nine degrees warmer than the San Alfonso del Mar beach that is situated one hundred meters from it.
Designed by Crystal Lagoons Corporations, Algarrobo’s massive pool took five years and approximately $1.5 billion to build, with a maintenance fee of two million dollars per year. Its crystal clear waters offers a fine alternative to those who are too afraid to swim in the ocean, and has been attracting exceptionally large crowds since its opening. It even has its own beach!
Since the pool water is filtered using a computer-controlled system that draws water in from the ocean only to pump it back out, many would think that this could harm wildlife. However, biochemist Fernando Fischmann, founder of Crystal Lagoons Corporation, asserts that his « pulse oxidation » technology does no damage to the ecosystem.
If you ever find yourself in Chile for either business or pleasure, Algarrobo’s Pool would certainly make for a beautiful and refreshing visit!
